Liebster Blog Award

2014-liebster-awardThis is the first time I have received a blog award – many thanks to standing in the storm for the nomination!

The word “Liebster” originates from the German word “liebste” which means “dearest”. The origin of this award is unknown, although several posts have suggested a German blog. The rules of this award had changed over the years although the underlying goal remains the same: to bring attentions to blogs that have not been discovered yet. In 2010, the rule was to pick 3-5 blogs that have less than 3,000 readers but recently, you list 10 blogs with less than 200 subscribers. It is quite a dramatic difference, but for the better. Wouldn’t a blog of 3,000 readers be established (or discovered) by then?

  1. Thank the person who nominated you and link to their blog.  CHECK!
  2. Answer 10 questions given to you by the nominee before you.
  3. Create 10 questions of your own.
  4. Nominate 10 of your favourite blogs with fewer than 200 followers and notify them of their nomination.

Checking number 2 off…. The questions are:

1. Dragons or Mermaids?

Dragon. While both are mythical creatures, a dragon is a symbol of strength and protection, power and strength while a mermaid is known for its beauty. I would prefer to be able to protect rather than simply being a pretty vase.

This comparison reminds me of a viral article: mermaid and whale?

2. What’s your favourite colour and is there a back story?

All shades of purple.. lilac, violet.. lavender. I love lavender so much, maybe because it was in a shade of purple, that I took (or stole *gasp*) a stem of it from the Yorkshire Lavender Farm. Even though there is no more smell, it sits at the corner of my desk and I’ll smile every single time I look at it.

I like to find connections between things and I realised I probably have a purple aura as well…

“… People who have a predominant amount of purple in their Aura are seen as mysterious and secretive. … The Purple Aura individual does not have a wide circle of many friends. But the friends they do have are held close and are respected, admired and loved. People with a predominant purple Aura tend to be unlucky in love but once they have found their perfect soul mate are loyal and loving for life.”

Purple Aura by Alizons Psychic Secrets

I used to like pink because when I thought that was the right thing to do; girl love pink, guy love blue. Then, one day, I realised that anything in shades of purple attracts my attention.. and I fell in love with the colour. It happens! Now, I like to joke that if I found a guy I like as much as the colour purple.. well… I’ll just know. 😉

3. What made you decided to start blogging?

I started blogging because I typed faster than I write, and it was the trendy thing to do compared to a journal. Keeping it mainstream.

I remembered the exact date I started blogging. It was 1 Jan, 2005. I started with other blogs like MSN Live, Facebook and Blogspot, which was eventually privatised (or deleted) when I stuck with WordPress in Sept 2009. My initial reason for creating a WordPress account (smartest blogging decision to date) is to share my life while studying abroad with my friends and family back home in Malaysia. Later I found out a platform that brings bloggers together, so I stuck with WordPress even after I came back home.

4. How would you describe yourself?

Contented. Optimistic realist. I believe in the power of positive thinking. I find beauty in the simplest things; a clear blue sky, a smile from a passing stranger, the flower on the side walk, or a bird perching at a branch. In a world that sometimes hurt, I like to look for the silver lining among grey clouds.. because life is too short to live with regrets.

And I’m also a girl who really loves purple.

More about myself in my About the Author page.

5. Who’s your favorite Disney Villain (If you haven’t seen a Disney movie then animated villain)

To be honest, I never noticed villains in Disney stories. So I have none. There’s no true interpretation of who a villain is – it really depends on what you think.

This reminds me of an excerpt of One Tree Hill the series (nope, it is not Disney). A short recap of the series; Dan is the antagonist while Lucas is the protagonist.

LUCAS: Every kid wants to be Sherlock Holmes at some point.
DAN: Well, not me. I was always partial to Professor Moriarty.
LUCAS: You do realise he was the villain.
DAN: That’s one interpretation.

– One Tree Hill Season 2.

6. What was your first pet?

I never had a pet. Yes, it is a little sad. I’m a little afraid of animals with fur – especially dogs. When I was 8, I went to a friend’s house. She had conveniently forgotten to mention that she had 8 Rockwellers. I remembered when the dogs stood up on their hind legs, they were all taller than I am.

So that leaves fish and birds. It’s a little sad to see these animals enclosed in a little bowl or cage, isn’t it? They belong with the nature, wild and carefree.

7. What book are you reading right now?

I just finished A Hundred Names by Cecilia Ahern. Not to spoil anything, but I really love the warm and fuzzy feeling it gives as I read the last page of the novel. To me, a good book is mostly defined based on its ending. A good ending means that I’ll picked another book of the same author to read again. And I will definitely try more of CA’s book from now on. My next book is probably Time of Our Lives, as introduced by a good friend.

This is the first book I picked up after a being an avid fan of Jodi Picoult’s books.  I really love JP’s  writing that made me read all her books. Her amazing ability to string emotions into words struck a chord into my heart. Her stories were undeniably depressing as she daringly explores controversial issues like genetical modified babies,  wrongful birth lawsuit,  school shooting etc.

I started with My Sister’s Keeper and I read it so many times that and it made me tear up every single time. One particular phrase that stuck to me was the first paragraph of the epilogue:

“There should be a statute of limitation on grief. A rulebook that says it is all right to wake up crying, but only for a month. That after 42 days you will no longer turn with your heart racing, certain you have heard her call out your name. That there will be no fine imposed if you feel the need to clean out her desk; take down her artwork from the refrigerator; turn over a school portrait as you pass – if only because it cuts you fresh again to see it. That it’s okay to measure the time she has been gone, the way we once measured her birthdays.”

― Jodi Picoult, My Sister’s Keeper

8. Has anything profound ever happened to you?

I may have been through a turmoil last couple of weeks. But then extraordinary things happen too, which proves that every cloud has its silver lining.

“There’s always going to be bad stuff out there. But here’s the amazing thing — light trumps darkness, every time. You stick a candle into the dark, but you can’t stick the dark into the light.”

― Jodi Picoult, Change of Heart

9. What your opinion on giving diamonds as gift?

A gift is only as precious as its giver.

10. What is the most amazing thing that has ever happened to you?

To point out one amazing thing is impossible. Extraordinary things are happening everyday. All I can say is when a door of opportunity closes, another opens. And the road to success are always under construction.

One Tree Hill Quotes (S1 to S8)

Lists of quotes from Season 1 to Season 7  in no particular order.

One Tree Hill

Quotes quoted from other authors

William Shakespeare: There is a tide in the affairs of men, which taken at the flood, leads on to fortune but omitted, and the voyage of their life is bound in shallows and mesires. On such a full sea are we now afloat and we must take the current when it serves or lose the ventures before us.

Ayn Rand: Do not let your fire go out, spark by irreplaceable spark in the hopeless swamps of the not quite, the not yet, and the not at all. Do not let the hero in your soul perish in lonely frustration for the life you deserved and have never been able to reach. The world you desire can be won. It exists. It is real. It is possible. It is yours.

E.E. Cummings: To be nobody but yourself in a world which is doing its best, night and day, to make you everybody else means to fight the hardest battle, which any human being can fight, and never stop fighting.

John Steinbeck: It seems to me that if you or I must choose between two courses of thought or action, we should remember our dying and try so to live for our death brings no pleasure on the world.

Octavio Paz: Solitude is the profoundest fact of the human condition. Man is the only being who knows he is alone.

Oliver Wendell Holmes: ‘Many people die with their music still in them. Too often it is because they are always getting ready to live. Before they know it, time runs out’.”

John Steinbeck: As happens sometimes, a moment settled and hovered and remained for much more than a moment. And sound stopped and movement stopped for much, much more than a moment. Then gradually time awakened again and moved sluggishly on.

T.H. White: Perhaps we all give the best of our hearts uncritically to those who hardly think about us in return.

Katherine Anne Porter: There seems to be a kind of order in the universe in the movement of the stars and in the turning of the earth and the changing of the seasons. But human life is almost pure chaos. Everyone takes his stance, asserts his own rights and feelings, mistaking the motives of others, and his own.

HG Adler: There comes a time when every life goes off course. In this desperate moment you must choose your direction. Will you fight to stay on the path while others tell you who you are? Or will you label yourself? Will you be honored by your choice? Or will you embrace your new path? Each morning you choose to move forward or to simply give up.

Albert Camus once wrote “Blessed are the hearts that can bend; they shall never be broken.” But I wonder if there’s no breaking then there’s no healing, and if there’s no healing then there’s no learning. And if there’s no learning then there’s no struggle. But struggle is a part of life. So must all hearts be broken?

Quotes originally from the series itself.

So why’d you tell me that? I mean, we don’t even know each other.
Maybe that’s the point.

“There’s no shame in being afraid. Hell, we’re all afraid. What you gotta do is figure out what you’re afraid of because when you put a face on it, you can beat it. Better yet, you can use it.”

“It’s hard to fight the things we are afraid of. Sometimes we just need a little help.”

“Don’t be so quick to judge me. It’s easy to have all the answers from a distance, but everybody makes decisions they regret. [..] But we learn to live with it. It’s part of life.”

What a frightening thing the human is, a mass of gauges and dials and registers, and we can read only a few and those perhaps not accurately.

“Yeah. You see, then a funny thing happened; Haley. She showed me that you can find the good in everybody, if you just give them a chance. The benefit of the doubt. Sometimes, people disappoint you. Sometimes they surprise you. But you never really get to know them … until you listen for what’s in their hearts and that’s what Haley did with Nathan. That’s what we should do for them. So for you sceptics out there, prepare to be surprised. So this is to my … brother and my little sis in-law, and in love.”

Tree Hill is just a place somewhere in the world. Maybe it’s a lot like your world, maybe it’s nothing like it. But if you look closer, you might see someone like you. Someone trying to find their way. Someone trying to find their place. Someone trying to find their self. Sometimes it seems like you are the only one in the world who’s struggling, who’s frustrated, or unsatisfied, or barely getting by. But that feeling’s a lie. And if you just hold on, just find the courage to face it all for another day, someone or something will find you and make it all okay. Because we all need a little help sometimes. Someone to help us hear the music in the world, to remind us that it won’t always be this way. That someone is out there. And that someone will find you.

You ever look a picture of yourself, and see a stranger in the background? It makes you wonder how many strangers have pictures of you. How many moments of other peoples life have we been in. Were we a part of someone’s life when their dream came true or were we there when their dream died. Did we keep trying to get in? As if we were somehow destined to be there or did the shot take us by surprise. Just think, you could be a big part of someone else’s life, and not even know it.

Because it’s only when you’re tested that you truly discover who you are. And it’s only when you’re tested that you discover who you can be. The person that you want to be does exist, somewhere in the other side of hard work and faith, and belief and beyond the heartache and fear of what life has.

But once in a while people push on to something better. Something found just beyond the pain of going it alone and just beyond the bravery and courage it takes to let someone in. Or to give someone a second chance. Something beyond the quite persistence of a dream.

There are moments in our lives when we find ourselves at a crossroad, afraid, confused, without a road map. The choices we make in those moments can define the rest of our days. Of course when faced with the unknown, most of us prefer to turn around and go back.

There comes a time when every life goes off course. In this desperate moment who will you be? Will you let down your defenses and find solace in someone unexpected? Will you reach out? Will you face your greatest fears bravely or move forward with faith? Or will you succumb to the darkness in your soul?

When life comes at you out of the darkness, who will you choose to face it with? Will they be wise? Will their love for you help them to lead you to the light, or will they lose their way in the darkness? Will they make noble choices, or will that person be someone untested, someone new? Life comes rushing at you from out of the darkness. And when it does, is there someone you can depend on when it does?

Regret comes in all shapes and sizes. Some are small , like when we do a bad thing, for a good reason. Some are bigger, like when we let down a friend. Some of us escape the pains of regret by making the right choice. Some of us have little time for regret, because we’re looking forward to the future. Sometimes we have to fight to come to terms with the past. And sometimes we bury our regret, by promising to change our ways. But our biggest regrets are not for the things we did… but the things we didn’t do. The things we didn’t say that could save someone we care about. Especially when we can see the dark storm that’s headed their way.

You know, say what you will about the ravages of sports in this corporate age where overpaid athletes expect prima donna treatment, but there’s still something some unifying about sporting in it’s purest form, when athletes rise above themselves and touch greatness, and in doing so remind us all that we all have greatness inside of us.

Have you ever had a dream that seemed so real when you woke up you didn’t know what to believe? What would you do if what you thought was true wasn’t, and what you thought wasn’t true was. Would you retreat into your dreams with the hope of finding a more perfect reality? Sometimes life is stranger than a dream, and the only way to wake up is to face what lies are hidden in your soul. And you can only hope that in those moments of dark reflection, that you are not alone.

Truth is still absolute. Believe that. Even when that truth is hard and cold, and more painful than you’ve ever imagined. And even when truth is more cruel than any lie.

Sometimes I wonder if anything’s absolute anymore. Is There still right and wrong? Good and bad? Truth and lies? Or is everything negotiable, left to interpretation, grey. Sometimes we’re forced to bend the truth, transform it, cause we’re faced with things that are not of our own making. And sometimes things simply catch up to us.

My best friend recently reminded me of a quote, by William Shakespeare, that seems appropriate. “There is a tide in the affairs of men, […].” I think that what that quote means is that life is short and, opportunities are rare, and we have to be vigilant in protecting them. And, not only the opportunities to succeed but, the opportunity to laugh, to see the enchantment in the world, and…to live, because life doesn’t owe us anything. As a matter of fact, I think we owe something to the world. And, if we can just believe..

I believe in our lives we were all meant to do something. It does not matter when your success comes, success can come whenever you want it to.

Walk into any club on the strip tonight, and just look at the kids. Look into their eyes. I mean they’re all looking for something to believe in, and I think that music can be the thing to change the world.

The rest of your life is a long time and whether you know it or not it’s being shaped right now. You can choose to blame your circumstances on fate or bad luck or bad choices or you can fight back. Things aren’t always going to be fair in the real world, that’s just the way it is but for the most part you get what you give. Let me ask you all a question. What’s worse: not getting everything you wished for or getting it but finding out it’s not enough? The rest of your life is being shaped right now with the dreams you chase, the choices you make and the person you decide to be. The rest of your life is a long time and the rest of your life starts right now.

I think I’m realizing that I can’t help everybody, and still somehow feel responsible. I don’t know why I keep trying.

Much as some of us fight it, our parents have a mystical hold over us, the power to affect our thoughts and emotions the way only they can. It’s a bond that changes over time, but doesn’t diminish, even if they’re half a world away, or in another world entirely. It’s a power we never fully understand. We’re left only to wonder that when our time comes, what kind of hold will we have on our children?

The thing is there is never a time when you will be more honest, and your convictions will be stronger, and your motives will be more pure than they are right now. Which means you should chase whatever excites you. Be confident, and take risks, and paint over my words so you can start writing your own. My story may have inspired you, but I’m certain your story will inspire the next girl to live in our room. I want you to know you don’t need somebody to write about you in order for your life to mean something. You can write about yourself… make your own destiny. Then years from now the next girl will keep what you write on that door long enough to remind you how inspired your life is. And you can tell that girl to paint over the door because you realize the words you wrote, the friends you had, the urgency you felt will always be there under the paint. The love you professed will always be there, the spark of something undeniable, a seed of hope, the truth for better or for worse burning fiercely just below the surface

[book] It was more than just a comet because of what it brought to his life: direction, beauty, meaning. There are many who couldn’t understand, and sometimes he walked among them. But even in his darkest hours, he knew in his heart that someday it would return to him, and his world would be whole again… And his belief in God and love and art would be re-awakened in his heart.

My Mom used to sing to me, I don’t think I’ve ever told anyone that before, it was like our little secret. But every night she’d come in and she’d tuck me in and she’d sing something, like lullaby’s or album rock stuff. And after she was gone I remember lying in bed for the first time and just feeling silence, you know. Then realizing for the rest of my life that it was gone, all her songs were gone, her voice and the way it used to soothe me, just all of it. So I guess I tried to find new songs to fill that quiet, but none of them ever really have. Now she’s gone and Mia’s gone… and Luke is gone. There’s just silence…There’s just silence. I come in here and I sit in silence and hear the echoes of who we used to be. And so I wish for patience, and grace, and strength to just let him be happy. Mostly I pray for the strength to not make his life worse because of what I want. That’s the toughest part, letting go, you know? That’s the part of grace that really sucks.

Make a wish and place it in your heart. Anything you want. Everything you want.

Do you have it? Good. Now believe it can come true.

You never know where the next miracle is going to come from, the next smile. The next wish come true. But if you believe that it is right around the corner. And you open your heart and mind to the possibility of it. To the certainty of it. You just might get the thing you’re wishing for. The world is full of magic. You just have to believe in it.

So make your wish. Do you have it?

Good. Now believe in it.

With all your heart.

It’s been said that the saddest thing a man will ever face is what might have been. But what of a man whose faced with what was? Or what may never be? Or what can no longer be? Choosing the right path is never easy. It’s a decision we make with only our hearts to guide us. But sometimes we find our way to something better. Sometimes we fight through the regret and remorse of our mistakes, our malice and our jealousy and the shame we feel for not being the people we were meant to be. And that’s when we find our way to something better. Or when something better finds its way to us.

Sometimes when you’re young you think nothing can hurt you. It’s like being invincible. Your whole life is ahead of you and you have big plans. Big Plans. To find your perfect match, the one who completes you. But as you get older you realize it’s not always that easy. It’s not until the end of your life that you realize how the plans you made where simply plans. Because at the end when you’re looking back instead of forward you want to believe you made the most of what life gave you. You want to believe you’re leaving something good behind. You want it all to have mattered.

Most of the time, love doesn’t really need words.

You know that romantic notion that all the garbage and the pain is really healing and beautiful and sort of poetic? It’s not. It’s just garbage and it’s pain. You know what’s better? Love. The day that you start thinking that love is overrated is the day that you’re wrong. The only thing wrong with love and faith and belief is not having it.

That’s where it gets you. Thinking you had a choice. Love finds you, Son, you don’t find love. It’s got a little bit to do with destiny, fate, what’s written in the stars. A lot to do with the simple fact most women are smarter than we are. And wily. Your sorry butt never had a chance.

Did you ever wonder what it would be like if you weren’t you anymore? If you were suddenly gone, how would your world react? Whatever you imagined is wrong. There’s nothing romantic about death. Grief is like the Ocean. It’s deep and Dark and bigger than all of us. And pain is like a thief in the night. Quiet. Persistent. Unfair. Diminished by time and faith and love. I didn’t know Quentin Fields but I’m jealous of him because I see how his absence has affected the people that did know him so I know that he did matter to them. And I know he was loved. People say Quentin Fields was a great basketball player. Graceful. Fluid. Inspiring. They say on a good night it almost seemed as though he could fly. And now he can.

You know what? Um… you guys asked me what the point was to all of this, school, literature… life. And, uh I said there was no point. And that’s not true. What I should have said was, “I don’t know”. Because the truth is, not long ago, I sat where you are and wondered exactly the same things. When something that’s tragic and evil and unexplainable happens, like losing someone forever… I still wonder, just like you do. Alright, everybody, get out a piece of paper and pen.

You know, we spend all this time building something up, And then we don’t enjoy it. We just sit there, terrified that someone is gonna take it away from us. And there was this girl, and she didn’t answer to anything or anyone. And that made me jealous.

But when you mention your friends being happy, you define happiness strictly in terms of relationship and family. The question is, why are you so insistent on going through life alone?

Sometimes when you look back at your life certain moments stand out: the day you graduated high school, your wedding day, the day you found out you were going to be a father.

I believe in true love. I believe in love at first sight. I believe love conquers all. And that doesn’t mean there’s not gonna be hard days or difficult things to deal with, because there will be. But finding that person who does it for you and knowing that person loves you back it just makes everything so much easier.[….] That was the dream. And here we are 10 years later and we all get to witness today a dream come true.

Lucas: Peyton, I’ve loved you since the first time i saw you. And this ring and these words are just simply a way to show the rest of the world what has been in my heart for as long as I’ve known you. I love you, Peyton Elizabeth Sawyer. I always have and I always will.
Peyton: Lucas Scott. We’ve been through so much together. And despite how confused I’ve been or lost I might have gotten there was always you. Finding me and saving me. You deserve to be adored so that’s what we’re gonna do, your baby and me. We are going to adore you for years to come. I am so terribly in love with you. And I always will be.

“You told me that someday I’d be ready to let someone in. I think today might be someday.”

Take a look at yourself in a mirror who do you see looking back?
Is it the person you want to be?
Or is there someone else you were meant to be the person you were meant to be but fell short of?
Is someone telling you you can’t or won’t? Because you can.
Believe that love is out there.
Believe that dreams come true every day. Because they do.
Sometimes happiness doesn’t come from money or fame or power. Sometimes happiness comes from good friends and family and the quiet nobility of leading a good life.
Believe that dreams come true every day. Because they do.
Believe that dreams come true every day. Because they do.
So take a look in that mirror and remind yourself to be happy because you deserve to be. Believe that.
And believe that dreams come true every day. Because they do.

Forgiveness is never easy. Bitterness is easy. Hatred is easy. But forgiveness, that’s a tough one. Sometimes, people say things they don’t mean or do things they can’t take back. Sometimes we do things we can’t take back. So we feed ourselves to starve the pain.

We all want to be loved…to be happy. So why aren’t we? Because we’ve become experts at sabotaging our own happiness. Feeling like victims, when in fact it’s the choices we make, the bad habits, the vices, the inability to show love and compassion. These are the things that tear us down. We’re not victims. We’re assassins when it comes to love and happiness.

You can’t erase who we were or what we had, no one can. We burned so bright together.

Falling in love is the easiest thing you’re ever gonna do. It’s the most exciting thing, the most powerful thing.

Who you are is who you are. We’re liars. We’re thieves. We’re addicts. We take our happiness for granted until we hurt ourselves or someone else. We hold grudges. And when faced with our mistakes, we reinvent the past. We reinvent ourselves. At least we try. We’re prideful, and we’re lustful, and we’re incredibly flawed. And eventually, our flaws catch up to us.

Sometimes I think we waste our words and we waste our moments, and we don’t take the time to say the things that are in our hearts when we have the chance.

“I have to believe in something right now because without hope, I won’t be able to breathe.”

When you’re passionate about something, you put everything you got into it.

It all just seems so fake. This idea that good things happen to good people and there’s magic in the world, and that the meek and righteous will inherit it. There’s too many good people who suffer for something like that to be true. There are too many prayers that go unanswered. Every day we ignore how completely broken this world is, and we tell ourselves that it’s all going to be okay, “You’re going to be okay.” But it’s not okay. And once you know that, there’s no going back. There’s no magic in the world at least today there isn’t.

Your mother was proud of you. And it would break her heart to know that her beautiful, kind, inspiring daughter was suffering like this. I know that because I’m a mother. And so are you. Now, our lives are difficult, and our loss unbearable sometimes. So grieve… and struggle, and you find your way back on your own terms and in your own way. But remember this… your mother would want you to be vibrant and inspiring in the face of losing her. She’d want you to fight your pain with all you’ve got. Because that’s the daughter that she raised. That’s the daughter that she loved.

“Everyone says the next thing I do, the next choice I make, is going to define me. My career. My life. Well the next thing I want to do is ask you to be my wife. And tell you how much I love you. And how nothing else matters. I look into your eyes, Brooke, and I see the rest of my life. And I see it with you. Marry me, Brooke Davis.”
